Two people were killed and six others were critically injured in an accident on the R61 near Port St Johns on Thursday evening.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport says the driver of a Toyota LDV lost control and it overturned.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says the vehicle was traveling from Mthatha towards Port St Johns with 8 occupants
He says two female passengers died at the scene, while the other six, including the driver, sustained critical injuries.
The injured were treated and rushed to hospital for further medical care.
Binqose says speed and driving under the influence of alcohol are suspected to be the main contributing factors.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
