Gqeberha ‘soccer coach’ jailed for sexual assault

File

A 28-year-old Gqeberha ‘soccer coach’ was sentenced to five years imprisonment for sexually assaulting young boys between 2017 and 2018.

The National Prosecuting Authority said Sizwe 'Lali' Mphini was sentenced in the Regional Court this week following his earlier conviction for the crimes.

Spokesperson, Anelisa Ngcakani, said the youngest of his victims was eight years old while the oldest was 14 years old.

She said Mphini had approached the boys in 2016 and volunteered to be their soccer coach and promised to buy them soccer kit.

Ngcakani said the children testified that Mphini never bought them soccer jerseys and  instead “fondled their private parts.”

She said he was arrested after a suspicious parent raised the alarm.
