Eastern Cape police are searching for three men who held up and robbed two police officers in East London on Thursday.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the incident happened at around 12.30 in the morning.
She said the officers from Buffalo Flats police station were on their way to attend to a complaint when they were approached by three men who enquired about a prisoner.
Naidu says they then held the two policemen at gunpoint and disarmed them while also taking their cell phones.
She said a case of robbery is under investigation.
The robbery of the two policemen came on the same day that the police minister was visiting Buffalo City to assess the province's safer festive season programme.

Meanwhile, two Eastern Cape police stations were the targets of armed criminals this year.
In March police launched a manhunt for suspects who robbed the Somerset East police station of an unknown number of firearms.
Last month, the Hawks confirmed a "break-in" at the Hogsback police station during which firearms were also stolen.
