Three Eastern Cape traditional nurses accused of assault and attempted murder will make a second appearance in court on Thursday.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says the three men, aged between 23 and 35 made a brief appearance in the Lady Grey magistrate’s court on Monday and were remanded in custody.
He says an initiate was badly assaulted at one of the initiation schools in the Lady Grey area earlier this month.
Nkohli says the 22-year-old victim sustained serious burn wounds and other injuries over various parts of his body which landed him in the ICU at the hospital.
He says these arrests are just one of many in the Eastern Cape as part of their ongoing operations to those contravening the Customary Initiation Act 2 of 2021.
Police have arrested 80 suspects so far of whom 16 are women, who allowed boys as young as 13 to undergo initiation.
WO Nkohli says other arrests were for murder.
He says furthermore, 175 initiates were rescued from illegal schools this season while several schools were destroyed.
The three nurses currently in custody will be allocated a legal representative on Thursday.
