The Eastern Cape Education Department has stepped in to assist the families of two young learners who died in a freak accident this week.
Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima, said the children's uncle was also killed in the incident in the Khanyisa Administrative Area near Flagstaff.
He said according to reports, Grade Six learner Una Mendwana and Grade R learner Anga Maqakamba were fetched by their uncle from the Mzimeni Primary School on Monday.
"As they were walking along a footpath not too far from the road, two cars were involved in a head-on collision and then went off the road. The three got caught up in that accident when the two cars went on to hit them while they were walking," he said.
Mtima said the Uncle and one child died on the scene while the other learner passed on while being transported to the hospital.
"District officials are on the ground trying to find ways to help the family and the school during this difficult time," Mtima said.
