Relay EMS
Two children drowned in two separate incidents in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro on Thursday.
The NSRI first responded to Smelly Creek during lunchtime, where a seven-year-old was reported missing after being caught in a rip current.
An extensive shoreline search was conducted, but the child remains missing.
A few minutes later, another incident occurred at Maitlands Beach, where a 12-year-old girl was pulled from the water by lifeguards.
According to Relay EMS, who assisted in both incidents, CPR efforts on the child were unsuccessful, and she was declared dead.
It said beachgoers reported other possible casualties, leading to an intensive search.
Meanwhile, Relay EMS responded to a near-drowning incident at Kings Beach, where three friends were caught in a rip current while swimming.
All three were brought safely to shore thanks to the swift actions of the lifeguards on duty.
One of the swimmers, a 17-year-old girl, was unresponsive but was stabilised on the beach and airlifted via helicopter to a medical facility for further care.
Bathers are urged to swim only where lifeguards are on duty.
