A 40-year-old man who stopped at a shop in Walmer township was shot dead on Tuesday when suspects thought he was escorting a delivery van.
Spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says just after 11 am police were notified about a shooting incident in Sawatsha Street.
He says upon arriving at the scene the victim's body was found inside his white Corsa bakkie.
Beetge says it is alleged that another bakkie in front of the shop was delivering paraffin and was in the process of being robbed by four unknown men.
He says when the victim stopped in front of the shop the suspects thought he might be their escort.
Captain Beetge says they opened fire on the man who died on the scene.
The suspects fled the scene and are still at large.
A case of murder and armed robbery is under investigation.
