Police in Gqeberha arrested two suspects and recovered a firearm after monitoring a funeral in Kwazakhele on Saturday.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said members of SAPS Kwazakele Vispol Task Team received information about a firearm in a vehicle that was at a funeral.
“The members spotted the silver Chev Aveo and when the driver noticed the police vehicle, he drove away. The members attempted to stop the vehicle however it sped away,” she said.
Naidu said as the chase continued down Makubalo Street, the passenger was seen throwing out the firearm.
“Police succeeded in stopping the vehicle and the driver and passenger were arrested. The 9mm pistol (with the serial number filed off) was also recovered,” she said.
The suspects, aged 30 and 39 years old were detained on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition and will appear in the Motherwell Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
