The Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is seeking answers over the reported R15 million rand spent on the Lesseyton Sports Field near Komani.
The hand-over by the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality on Monday got tongues wagging and is top trending on Twitter, with social media commentators questioning the amount spent on the stadium.
Pictures posted on social media show two rudimentary metal stands and open fields.
Now, Cogta MEC, Xolile Nqatha, wants answers by the end of the week.
His spokesperson, Mamkeli Ngam, says the MEC is concerned about the reports on social media and understands the anger from the online community.
Meanwhile, the Enoch Mgijima Municipality issued a statement on their Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon explaining the scope of the project, but did not mention the cost.
The Municipality says the construction of the sports fields and associated infrastructure for the community of Lesseyton began last year.
Enoch Mgijima Municipality says the infrastructure included construction of rugby and soccer fields, athletics track, and pallisade fencing and ablution facilities among others.
The statement also referred to the water and electrical services that were provided.
The Municipality says it made the investment in the rural village in support of sport activities in the area.
Several political leaders took to social media to raise their concerns.
The #TsotsiGame must end.
