The Eastern Cape Department of Transport says 12 people were killed in two accidents in the province on Sunday.
Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said eight people were killed when a vehicle with 14 occupants overturned on the road between Dutywa and Mthatha at around 8 pm on Sunday evening.
He said four other occupants including the driver sustained severe injuries, while three others sustained serious injuries.
Binqose said the injured were taken to the Butterworth Hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, he said four people were killed and five others were injured in a single vehicle accident near Kwa Bhacha (Mount Frere) on Sunday morning.
Binqose said the driver of a light delivery vehicle was transporting church congregants when he lost control of the vehicle and it overturned at Dangwana Village. The deceased included two men and two women.
He said the South African Police Service would be opening culpable homicide cases in both accidents.
