TV actor in Gauteng court after raid on brothel

Seventeen people, including an actor on popular local television drama “Scandal” are expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court related to charges of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said a raid was conducted at a brothel in Springs, Ekurhuleni, on Thursday after a woman went to the police and complained that she had been held against her will at the premises.

“At least 17 people, aged between 19 and 43, were arrested under the Sexual Offences Act. The woman who complained to the police is now at a place of safety, investigations continue,” Makhubela said.

Eleven of those arrested were female.

The raid followed the rescue of five teenage girls allegedly used as sex slaves at a house in the same area in another recent case of human trafficking. They were found in a house disguised as a barber shop. A teenage girl and the owner of the premises, a foreign national, were arrested.

Police said he was found in possession of drugs and pornography material. The teenager allegedly recruited the girls for the property owner.
