Metrorail suspended train services in all corridors of Gauteng on Monday morning as protests, riots and looting continue in large parts of the province.
The violence and looting spread from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng over the weekend in the wake of Jacob Zuma’s incarceration, leading to large scale protests all over the City of Johannesburg.
Acting Gauteng Metrorail Spokesperson, Tony Games says the train service has been suspended to ensure the safety of commuters and infrastructure.
In Nelson Mandela Bay, protestors torched an iron-ore tipper truck on the N2 near Bluewater Bay/Truckers Inn at around 6 am.
Captain Andre Beetge told Algoa FM News that the flames had been doused and that there are currently no protestors close to the area.
The N2 has since been re-opened and traffic is flowing.
