Truck full of beds hijacked in Nelson Mandela Bay

Police have recovered an 8-ton truck that was hijacked in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge, says the vehicle, which was transporting beds was found in Bukane Street in Zwide after the driver and his assistants were accosted by gunmen at around 4 am.

The truck was travelling on the Addo Road on the R335 and took the offramp on the N2 towards Truckers Inn when a grey Toyota Corolla blocked the road.

Captain Beetge says the two truck assistants were forced out of the vehicle at gunpoint.

The 55-year-old driver was instructed to drive towards Coega Harbour, where another suspect joined them.

He says the hijackers took the men to a bushy area where they were held for about two hours before being abandoned.

Beetge says the entire cargo of beds worth R250 000 is missing, while the hunt for the hijackers is underway.
