A truck driver has been jailed for 10 years in the East London Regional Court for being in possession of dagga worth R5m.
Police spokesperson, lieutenant-colonel Mtati Tana, says 55 year old Welile Makhanda, was jailed on Thursday.
Welile Makhanda, 55, was arrested by the East London Dog Unit on the N2 near Gonubie in the early hours of August 26, 2010, said Lt-Col Mtati Tana.
Police stopped and searched him as part of a routine patrol while he was on his way to Cape Town.
Maj-Gen Sandile Hloba praised the team that arrested Makhanda and investigated the case.
"We are determined to squeeze the space of criminals and will wipe out criminal syndicates and all those who find themselves on
the wrong side of the law," he said.
