A truck driver is in custody after another accident in the Eastern Cape this weekend which claimed the lives of four people.

The death toll from Sunday morning’s accident brings the number of people killed on the provinces roads this weekend to at least 13 people in three crashes reported since Friday.

According to provincial traffic authorities reckless and negligent driving may have played a role in the accident at around 04:00 on the N9 at Middleburg towards Noupoort.

Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the collision occurred between an empty manganese truck and a light delivery vehicle with three men and a woman.

He said the driver was arrested on the scene and will appear in court soon.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Middelburg Saps for further investigation.

The Department reported on Saturday that seven people were killed in an accident on the R58 road between Lady Grey and Maletswai (Aliwal North) that involved two vehicles.

On Friday evening two people were killed and eight others sustained injuries in a single-vehicle accident on the N2 road in EmaXesibeni at Nolangeni towards Kokstad.
