Trollip to "apologise" to EC Premier

DA Eastern Cape leader, Athol Trollip, will apologise to Eastern Cape premier, Phumulo Masualle, when the Bhisho Legislature holds a special sitting in Burgersdorp next week.

The two parties reached an agreement in chambers on Thursday in the Grahamstown High Court, where Trollip was due to lodge an application contesting his 15-day suspension and fine of a month's salary.

The sanction related to a long-running battle between the DA provincial leader and the Legislature over remarks he directed at Masualle over monies paid into his back account in the Mandela funeral funding scandal.

According to a statement from the Legislature today, Trollip had agreed to apologise to Masualle for any inconvenience and embarrassment caused.

"The Legislature welcomes the agreement and can confirm that Hon. Trollip has agreed to apologise in the next Sitting of the House scheduled for next week, Tuesday on 14 October 2014. The Legislature is happy with an undertaking that Hon. Trollip is going to apologise and we don't have any doubt that he will honour his commitment."

In a separate statement Trollip said "the respective legal representatives of the Democratic Alliance and the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature have reached an agreement to settle the impasse that has arisen out of the suspension and imposition of a fine of the leader of the opposition in the provincial legislature."

"Without divulging the contents of the agreement, it has been decided in the chambers of the presiding judge in the Grahamstown High Court, that Hon. Trollip will be invited to the next sitting of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature which will be held in Burgersdorp on Tuesday, 14 October 2014, where the legislature will be taking the "legislature to the people."

"This matter will be raised as the second point of order at the commencement of the special sitting of the legislature, where Hon. Trollip will read a public statement and a decision will be made regarding the current sanction against Hon. Trollip," the statement said.
