Eastern Cape Health MEC Dr. Pumza Dyantyi, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the four universities in the province in East London.
The universities are Fort Hare, Walter Sisulu, Rhodes and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
They've all pledged to assist the Eastern Cape Health Department to improve public health services.
MEC Dyantyi says the biggest concern in her department is human resources.
She says through the MOU the universities will produce more emergency health practitioners as well as nurses and health professionals to work in the province.
"We are hopeful that through this collaborative effort we will successfully address the critical shortage of emergency medical service practitioners to meet the demand of our province, address the huge risk of finding skills in the nursing profession due to the high number of nursing personnel being above the age of 50 years.." she said
