Trollip lays complaint about Bobani-led administration

Former Nelson Mandela Bay mayor, Athol Trollip, has asked the Public Protector to step and investigate allegations of financial mismanagement and misconduct by the city's new coalition government.

He said he wrote to Advocate Busisiwe Mkwebane this week claiming that the current coalition government led by Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani, had transgressed many legislative requirements and also flouted basic requirements when it came to financial management.

Trollip said issues of major concern were a proposal to bring back all suspended municipal staff and a recent item that was brought before Council where the new administration sought to amend an approved business plan related to the Municipality's intention to borrow R700 million.

He said this loan was meant for the augmentation of water, the prevention of unnecessary loss of water and other urgent infrastructure and energy-related projects.

"Some of the requests in this proposed item were that R100 million be used to provide bulk infrastructure to an unbudgeted new housing development at Florida Heights in Despatch and that R45 million be used for "festive season events" when R4m had already been allocated for this in the current budget".

The letter was also sent to the Ministers of Finance and Cooperative Governance, and Traditional Affairs.
