Tributes are pouring in for a seasoned athlete, coach and mentor who was killed on Saturday taking part in the Washie 100.
Police have identified the victim as 46-year-old Mcebisi Yose, who won the oldest and most enduring super ultra marathon in 2016.
Spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says they were summoned to an accident scene on the N6 between Sutterheim and East London.
He says upon arrival Yose was already declared dead after being hit by a bus.
Dozens of athletes and running clubs have expressed condolences to Yose's family, describing him as a true legend, an inspiration, a wonderful man and a good runner.
A seconder in the race also died after suffering a heart attack.
His name and further details were not divulged.
This is the first time an athlete has died in the race's 45-year history.
The race started at the Cathcart Country Club on Friday afternoon and finished 160 km later at the Buffs Club in East London.
