Trial set for alleged NMU rapist case

The Port Elizabeth High Court has set down a trial date for the case involving a 29- old-man accused of raping two Nelson Mandela University students.

The suspect, who cannot be named as he has not pleaded yet, briefly appeared in court for pre-trial proceedings on Monday.

Both the Prosecution and Defence agreed to set down the trial for the 27th of August until the 7th of September 2018.

According to court documents the suspect faces four counts of rape, two of forced sexual assault, robbery with aggravating circumstances and burglary.

During October last year, a 25-year-old student and her friend were violently attacked in a computer lab at the NMU Second Avenue Campus.

The man allegedly raped the students, robbed them of their cellphones and stabbed one of them with a pair of scissors.

It is further alleged that he forced the two women to carry a computer and monitor over the gate where he jumped and fled with the stolen goods.

He was arrested a few days after the attack in Govan Mbeki Avenue trying to sell the computer.

According to court documents he is facing four counts of rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances and burglary.

His defence attorney, Khayalethu Saziwa, indicated to the court that the suspect would plead guilty to charges against him.

The 29-year-old was also linked to the rape of a 27-year-old woman near Greenbushes.
