Trial date reserved for EC woman accused of impersonating a lawyer

The Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court has reserved a trial date for the Eastern Cape woman charged with fraud and theft for impersonating a lawyer.

Brenda Wardle( 56) was arrested in East London in June after evading trial for more than a year.

She is accused of defrauding an Eastern Cape family out of more than R500 000 by pretending to be a lawyer and offering to assist a convicted murderer between 2009 and August 2013

The State indicated in court on Thursday that it would be ready for trial between the 26 and the 27th of September.

Wardle has meanwhile revealed that she will file an appeal application in the High Court against a decision to deny her bail.

She was denied bail by magistrate, Lionel Lindoor earlier this month who said that Wardle she would, in all likelihood, commit the same crimes.

Lindoor also said that Wardle had fustrated the justice system and abused the bail system by evading court on many occasions.

The Commericial Crimes Court Magistrate also advised her to consider a Legal Aid lawyer to assist her if she decided to file the bail appeal.

Wardle conducted her own defence during her first bail application.

She is expected back in court again on the 11 August when she is expected to confirm if she is ready to go to trial.
