The 50-year-old Makhanda resident Sango Mayalo’s bail was extended while his three co-accused were remanded in custody.
Mawili Ndlovu, Andre Masia and Elton Khosa are all Mozambican nationals.
According to court papers, the group and a 5th accused who is now deceased, shot and killed a rhino in the Great Fish River Reserve and removed both its horns.
They were arrested at a roadblock on the way back to Gauteng on the 30th of December 2018 when the rhino horns were discovered concealed in the spare wheel compartment of their car.
The recovered rhino horns were linked to the carcass in the Great Fish River reserve through microchip technology as well as forensic DNA matching.
