Two men linked to the hijacking of a truck carrying catalytic converters worth R12.5 million appeared in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court in Port Elizabeth on Monday.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said Siyabulela Oliphant (31) and Sibongile Lerato Menta (32) were arrested on Friday.
They were remanded in custody to 13 April.
She said the arrests were made by a joint investigation team comprising of Provincial OCI PE members, Crime Intelligence and National Intervention Unit, who worked around the clock after the truck was hijacked on Friday.
Naidu said the driver was hijacked in Wright Street by a gunman who opened his truck door while he was waiting at a set of traffic lights.
She said he was ordered to drive on and the Cape Town off-ramp was bundled into the boot of a VW Polo before being driven around and then later dropped off in Struandale.
Naidu said the hijacked truck was found abandoned in Kwanobhule in Uitenhage on the same day.
During the arrests, police recovered 549 boxes of catalytic converters valued at R8.6 million.
She said more arrests are expected.
