Trial against "Estcourt cannibals" gets underway

The trial against three men accused of eating a woman they allegedly murdered, started in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday.

The case made national headlines when one of the accused, traditional healer Nino Mbatha, walked into the Estcourt police station where he admitted to the crime.

His co-accused Lungisani Magubane and Khaelihle Lamula were arrested shortly after.

The media soon started referring to the accused as the "Estcourt Cannibals".

They are accused of killing 24-year-old Zanele Hlatshwayo, who was reported missing by her family.

All three are accused stand charged with one count of murder or alternatively conspiracy to commit murder.

Mbatha, who initially confessed to police, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

He faces an extra two counts of contravening the National Health Act where it refers to the handling of human tissue.

All three have elected to remain silent.

DNA tests later confirmed that the human remains found in the possession of the accused were that of the missing Zanele.
