A group of Eastern Cape school children who were trapped at the Cango Mountain Resort due to an overflowing river are making their way home.
Oudtshoorn mayor, Chris McPherson, said several adults and 72 children from the Aliwal North Primary School were able to leave the resort early on Wednesday morning after the Le Roux River subsided overnight.
They have been unable to leave the resort since Sunday.
McPherson said the water level had subsided to the point where vehicles were able to safely cross the low-lying bridge.
He also said some roads in Oudtshoorn remain closed, as was Meiringspoort, while a section of the road to the Cango Mountain Resort was washed away.
Motorists were urged to proceed with caution.
In an earlier statement, the Municipality said there were no casualties reported among the children or adults, while a helicopter was placed on standby to deliver supplies.
