The Gamtoos Irrigation Board is reporting that the Kouga Dam is over 70% full following heavy rain over the weekend.

In a post on its Facebook page, the Board said at 6h15 on Wednesday morning, the dam was at 71.6% of capacity.

The Kouga Dam is one of four main supply dams for the Algoa Water system feeding the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

It also supplies water to the Kouga Municipality and to farmers for irrigation.

The South African Weather Service said that Nelson Mandela Bay's catchment areas received significant falls over the past four days.

Weather Office spokesperson, Garth Sampson, said 134 milimetres of rain was measured at Joubertina, 117 mm at Kareedouw, and Kouga Dam received 75.9 milimetres of rain.

There were also unconfirmed reports that Loerie and Groendal Dams have overtopped.

According to data from the SA Weather Service on Wednesday, Third Avenue Dip in Gqeberha received 109 mm, and a whopping 157.8 mm at St Albans weather station, with good falls measured at Makhanda (90.2), Port Alfred (8o.4), and Plettenberg Bay (77).
