Transport shutdown plans - this is what we know

The Department of Transport in the Province has called on scholar transport operators to revisit their plans for a total shutdown on Thursday as their actions will be illegal.

Provincial Traffic Spokesperson Unathi Bingqose says such actions will infringe on people's right to movement and harm learners and workers, not to mention those who depend on transport to collect their social grants

The matter of contention seems to be regarding payment for scholar transport, however, Binqose says it has nothing to do with a lack of funds but rather a technical challenge and other issues related to SARS.

A deadline for payment has been set for the 15th of May and the department pledged to honour that deadline.

Meanwhile in response to calls for a shutdown the South African National Council (SANTACO) said they will not partake in any shutdown.

SANTACO Chairperson for the Eastern Cape Bishop Yoleko says they acknowledge the challenges surrounding overall government regulation and support of the industry, they believe there should be more cordial avenues.

He says they too, are concerned about the non-payment of scholar transport Service providers but that the matter is being attended to.

SANTACO said they were committed to ensuring the safety of all commuters wishing to utilize their services, with the help of law enforcement.

Police and Traffic authorities will also be on standby for any eventualities.
