A 24-year-old Provincial rugby player attached to Griqualand West Rugby Union is expected to appear in the Kariega Magistrates Court on Thursday for violent and aggressive behaviour.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the alleged incident happened on Monday at a liquor store in Gavin Drive when he helped himself to alcohol and drank it inside the store.
She says according to witnesses he also started throwing bottles of liquor on the floor, before stabbing a customer.
Colonel Naidu says the customer has since been discharged from the hospital.
The prop, who plays for the Griquas is being detained on charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property, resisting arrest and public indecency.
The player, whose name is known to Algoa FM news, may only be named once he appears in court.
However, he has been suspended by his Union who expressed their shock and sadness at his alleged behaviour.
In a statement issued on Wednesday CEO of the Union Anri van Rooyen, confirmed the arrest stating that they do not condone this kind of behaviour on or off the field.
The player, who was identified in their statement has been suspended indefinitely.
