A former Eastern Cape traffic officer who murdered his girlfriend after discovering she was HIV positive has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said 38-year-old, Fanele Nxuseka was sentenced at the Mthatha High Court sitting in Port St. John's on Wednesday.
According to evidence presented in court, Nxuseka is married and had an affair with the deceased who he also abused.
Further evidence suggested that the woman did not disclose that she was on antiretroviral (ARV's) treatment.
Tyali said after he made the discovery, he believed that she might have infected him and his wife.
It was found that Nxuseka, went to his girlfriend's house in the Ngobozana area, in Lusikisiki, and demanded she leaves with him on 24 May 2020.
"The girlfriend left her cell phone with her sister and told her that she might not be coming back alive," he said.
Tyali said when she did not return home, her family conducted a search and found her lifeless body with multiple gunshot wounds, in the neighbouring Mmangweni village.
He said Nxuseka was arrested the following day.
He received an additional 12 years for kidnapping.
Ballistic tests conducted on the cartridges found on the scene positively linked them to his service pistol.
The woman's identity has not been revealed out of respect for her children and family.
