Tourism's total contribution to the coffers of Nelson Mandela Bay and gross geographic product in 2011 amounted to just over R4b.
That's according to tourism expert Peter Myles who was one of the speakers at Wednesday's function to welcome the arrival of low-cost airline Mango to Nelson Mandela Bay.
Myles said in the past compiling statistics was largely guesswork based on receipts.
However, he says Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism has now done some more detailed research with input from the tourism sector.
"The total impact of tourism it's contribution to GDP in Nelson Mandela Bay is just over R4b and those statistics supports just over 33 000 jobs and when you look at the industries that contribute at 17% is tourism contribution to GDP" Myles said.
