The Eastern Cape Education Department says learners at the Noncedo Public School at Thornpark near East London set fire to parts of the school while a high level meeting was underway to resolve their grievances.
Learners went on the rampage on Tuesday, setting fire to a school building, after complaining that teachers do not have their best interest at heart.
Bhisho education department spokesperson, Loyiso Pulumani, says police are keeping an eye on the school where learning has ground to a halt.
He says the district director has convened a meeting in East London with the school governing body and other stakeholders in a bid to normalise the situation at Noncedo Public School.
"They are currently convening a meeting to set out clearly what needs to be done, because it seems that there are serious interpersonal and miscommunication challenges at school on the one hand there might be a challenge between the managers and the teachers and at the one level between general student population and the whole teaching component" Pulumani said.
