Top brass to discuss crisis at Walter Sisulu University

Walter Sisulu University's closure because of labour problems will be addressed by higher education and training director general Gwebinkundla Qonde in Pretoria on Thursday.

In announcing the indefinite closure of the Eastern Cape University on Tuesday, administrator Lourens van Staden said the volatile situation unfolding had made it impossible for management to risk or to guarantee the safety and well-being of its students.

On Wednesday, police fired rubber bullets to disperse protesting students at the Butterworth campus.

The institution has been at a virtual standstill for the past 5 weeks because of a strike by University employees.
