Two people were killed late on Friday night after their vehicles collided head-on on the N2 road in East London near Western Avenue.
A spokesperson for Provincial Traffic Unathi Binqose says both vehicles, a VW Golf and BMW burst into flames after impact.
He says a lone driver in the VW Golf was travelling towards Butterworth while the BMW with a male driver and a toddler was heading from Butterworth toward East London.
Binqose says the three-year-old sustained severe injuries and was taken to Frere Hospital for further medical attention.
It is alleged that reckless and negligent driving was the main contributing factor to the accident.
A case of culpable homicide was opened by Cambridge Police.
The names of the two deceased men have not yet been released.
