A 35-year-old man is expected to appear in the Magistrates Court in Gqeberha on Monday following his arrest for the illegal possession of abalone.
Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says on Friday morning, members attached to the Gqeberha K9 Unit received information from the Unit in Humandorp about a vehicle travelling from Jeffreys Bay towards the city with abalone stacked inside.
She says members were immediately assisted by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries who closed all exit routes of the N2 freeway to prevent the vehicle from turning off the N2.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says the Toyota Avanza was pulled over near Thornhill where the vehicle was searched.
Police confiscated the abalone with an estimated value of R800 000.
The suspect will be charged for contravening the Marine Living Resource Act, 19 of 1998 Regulation 36 sub-section 1 and the illegal possession of abalone.
The Toyota Avanza was confiscated together with 2800 units of fresh chucked abalone.
