A 4-year-old child is receiving trauma counselling after his one-year-old cousin died in a shack fire on Wednesday.
The incident happened in a village in Mthatha.
Police Spokesperson Captain Dineo Koena said the deceased's mother was in another house within the homestead while her child and his four-year-old cousin were playing together in her shack.
The mom was allegedly making a fire outside the house to cook food for the family.
Neighbours alerted her that the shack was ablaze but the fire was too intense for them to extinguish.
