Police in Gqeberha have opened an inquest docket after a three-year-old boy died in a shack fire in the Gelvandale policing precinct on Tuesday.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said members responded to reports of the fire in Virgo Street in Barcelona at about 01h10.
She said the body of Elton Saterdag was found after the fire brigade extinguished the blaze.
Naidu said the child's 34-year-old mother, 10-year-old sister and a five-month-old sibling escaped.
She said the mom sustained burn wounds to her arms and back while the girl sustained burns to her arm and leg.
The infant sustained minor scratches.
All of them were taken to hospital for treatment.
Police suspect the fire may have been caused by a burning candle.
