Police in Kariega are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a driver hit and killed a child who was crossing the road with her friends.
Spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says the accident happened on the Rocklands Road just before seven on Monday evening.
He says the 39-year-old driver of a Red Toyota Tazz told police that he noticed children on the side of the road and reduced his speed.
The motorist, however, told police that when he was close to the group, two children suddenly ran across the road.
Captain Beetge says according to the motorist one child turned around to go back when he hit her with his car.
The victim was identified as 11-year-old Maria Makwena.
