Three young girls drown at Knysna

Three teenage girls from Kynsna drowned on Thursday afternoon when they were swept out to sea by a rip current .

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says the girls were swimming at Leisure Island when they were swept out to sea, a fourth girl managed to get out of the water un-assisted.

He says the girls aged between 12 and 13 were rushed to Kynsna Hospital but died despite extensive attempts to resuscitate them.

Lambinon is urging the public to be extremely cautious when swimming in open water as a spring tide will continue for the next seven days.

"It appears that the three had been local females including the fourth that survived, they had been down at Leisure Island and may have got into the water to take a dip but were swept out to sea by rip current. We are urging the public to be extremely cautious, we are in spring tide now meaning that rip currents are much stronger than normal. High tide is higher than normal, low tide is lower than normal and this will go on for the next seven or so." says Lambinon
