Two Eastern Cape policemen were killed in a multi-vehicle pile-up in the Izelie Pass between King Williams Town and Stutterheim.
Provincial police spokesperson, brigadier Marinda Mills, says they were two warrant officers stationed at Stutterheim.
Their names have not yet been released.
Three other people were injured when an articulated truck, a police vehicle, a bakkie and a passenger car collided at around 9 o'clock on Thursday morning.
Mills says the police members were transporting a prisoner from King Williams Town to Stutterheim when the accident happened.
Two culpable homicide dockets have been opened.
Algoa FM News has also learnt that a third police member died in an accident this week.
However, no further details of that incident are available.
