Port Elizabeth police have opened an inquest docket following the death of a 3-year old child in a house fire in Korsten.
Spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu says it is alleged that Elwyn Melville, his mother and another person were asleep in their home in Curtis Road on Friday evening, when the child’s mother woke up after smelling smoke in the house.
Naidu says she woke up the other man, and ran outside.
She says they then realised that the child was still in the house.
Naidu says by this time, the flames had engulfed the house and the child burned to death.
The cause of the fire is unknown and police are investigating.
