Three suspected hijackers arrested in PE

Three suspects are in police custody on charges of vehicle hijacking and possession of suspected stolen property, after the owner of a Mazda 323 and Port Elizabeth police tracked the vehicle following a hijacking in Motherwell during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Colonel Pricilla Naidu says the 28-year old driver of the jikeleza taxi picked up two men, and as they were driving, one of them pulled out a firearm and instructed the driver to drive to several places in the area.

She says at one stage, three men were picked up, and the driver was then instructed to get into the back seat while one of the suspects took over the driving.

When the vehicle stopped, the complainant managed to jump out and run away.

He alerted the owner of the vehicle and they started to track the movement of the vehicle.

Police joined in the search and as the vehicle stopped near shacks next to Monument crossing, members pounced on them.

A foot chase ensued and three suspects, aged 19, 20 and 23 were arrested.

The vehicle was recovered as well as 10 cellphones, a small amount of cash, a toy firearm and clothing which included handbags, jackets and shoes.

The estimated value is R45 000.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
