Police in Nelson Mandela Bay opened an inquest docket, after a 22-year-old man drowned while rescuing his teenaged friend in a dam in Kamesh on Saturday.
Spokesperson, Colonel Pricilla Naidu says it is alleged that the two friends were swimming in the dam in Lapland.
She says Lewellen Van Rooyen and a 16-year-old both got tired, and the teenager screamed for help.
Van Rooyen helped him to get to safety, and when the boy turned around, he saw his friend going under the water.
His body was retrieved by police divers.
Police are urging people not to swim in dams and rivers as it is very dangerous especially if people are not good swimmers.
Naidu says most drowning victims could not swim and there was no adult supervision at beaches or dams.
