Three perish in NMB house fires

File

Police in Nelson Mandela Bay have opened inquest dockets after three people died in two separate house fires in Kwanobuhle and New Brighton.

Spokesperson, Colonel Pricilla Naidu says two people burnt to death at their informal home in Kwanobuhle in the early hours of Sunday morning.

She says the bodies of a man and a woman were discovered after the fire department had extinguished the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

In the second incident, a 42-year-old man died after his flatlet burnt down in New Brighton.

Colonel Naidu says it is alleged that the man and his friends were drinking on Saturday evening when he lit a candle after the light bulb burnt out.

She says the friends left the house at around 02.30 am on Sunday and residents alerted the police just after 4am that the place was on fire.

"Residents are urged to make sure that burning candles and lamps are extinguished before going to bed. Most fatalities are caused through negligence", Colonel Naidu said.
