Three nabbed following shootout with PE police

Three suspects have been arrested following a high speed chase and shootout involving police members in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth.

Constable Mcedisi Mbombo said police noticed a VW polo driving recklessly in Ferguson Street on Monday morning.

Mbombo said police attempted to stop the vehicle but that it sped off.

He said they gave chase and that the suspects opened fire on the police vehicle in Tsewu Street.

The driver of the polo lost control of the vehicle and drove into a tree.

Police managed to arrest a woman and two men, while the other three occupants of the car fled on foot.

One firearm and several rounds of ammunition were confiscated and police subsequently discovered that Polo had been stolen during a house robbery in Uitenhage last night.

The suspects, aged between 22 and 27, are due to appear in court soon on charges of attempted murder and the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Meanwhile, police in New Brighton have appealed to the community for help in identifying a decomposing body found in a backyard flat of a home.

Police spokesperson, Constable Mcedi Mbombo, said the grim discovery was made by the home-owner who was looking for his son who lives in the flatlet.

He said deceased was found covered in blisters and had a swollen face.

Mbombo said police have opened an inquest docket and anyone who may have information that could assist the probe, should contact New Brighton police detectives.
