Mossel Bay man still on the run after trying to set children alight

A Mossel Bay man is on the run after he allegedly tried to set two minor children alight during a weekend domestic dispute.

Police said that Maxwell Masaka now faces possible charges of attempted murder, assault and arson.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Kappie Kapp, said that Masaka had deliberately set his Endlovini home alight at around 9pm on Saturday following an argument with the mother of the children.

He said Masaka had locked himself inside a room with a three-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl and threatened to kill the children.

Kapp said he had drenched the room in paraffin before setting the curtains alight.

He said Masaka then fled through a window.

"Police had to break down the door to the room to save the children, who were also allegedly forced to drink paraffin," he said.

Kapp said both children were rushed to the Mossel Bay Provincial Hospital where they were kept overnight for observation before being discharged.

Police have appealed to the public for assistance in tracing Masaka and to report his whereabouts to KwaNonqaba police in Mossel Bay.
