Three people were killed and two others sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision on the Mdantsane Access road in East London on Sunday night.
The Eastern Cape Transport Department says a Mercedes Benz with two men from East London collided with a Nissan Livina with two women and a man from Mdantsane.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says the Mercedes caught alight after the impact, but both occupants managed to make it out alive.
He says all three occupants from Nissan were declared dead at the scene.
Binqose says driving under the influence of alcohol has been cited as a possible contributing factor to the accident.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
