Three killed in two separate accidents in Nelson Mandela Bay

Three people were killed and four injured following two separate single-vehicle accidents in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart says at 2 pm the driver of a grey Chevrolet with one passenger was travelling on the Groendal road outside Kariega when he lost control and overturned.

She says the male driver died at the scene while his passenger was taken to hospital.

His name and age cannot yet be released.

A few hours later two people were killed in another single-vehicle accident on the M4 freeway in Gqeberha.

Police Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says a white Opel Corsa with five male occupants was travelling on the freeway in North End when the driver lost control shortly after 5 pm.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver was overtaking other cars when he lost control of his vehicle.

The car collided with the side barrier and overturned leaving victims scattered over the road as they were flung out of the vehicle.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says all five men were taken to hospital for treatment, but two passengers died from the injuries they sustained.

She says both victims were 19.

Their names can only be released once they have formally been identified by their loved ones.
