Illicit cigarettes worth R30 million discovered on Limpopo farm

Police in Limpopo have seized truckloads of illicit cigarettes worth R30 million on a farm situated between Musina and the Beitbridge Port of Entry.

The spokesperson for the Hawks Captain Matimba Maluleke says the discovery was made on Saturday.

He says five suspects were subsequently arrested and will appear in the local Magistrates Court on Monday.

Captain Maluleke says they received a tip-off about illicit cigarettes that were kept at a farm to be transported to different destinations in the country.

He says a multi-disciplinary sting operation was launched involving the police, SARS and the SANDF.

Captain Maluleke says when the team arrived on the farm they found a truck and a tractor with a trailer loaded with suspected illicit cigarettes that were covered in brick pallets.

The team later discovered another bakkie and truck in the vicinity, also fully loaded.

The suspects, aged between 26 and 44 were arrested for contravening the Customs and Excise Act.
