An Eastern Cape teacher who allegedly forced primary school children to clean up her vomit has been suspended on a charge of misconduct by the Provincial Education Department.

According to the education department spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima, the incident happened at Nyibiba Primary School educator, in Ugie, in the Joe Gqabi education district last Tuesday.

Mtima says the Head of the Department, Mahlubandile Qwase, instructed the District Manager to place the teacher on immediate suspension while an investigation is underway.

He says Qwase re-emphasized that instituting these disciplinary measures is a way to protect these minor learners.

“The HoD also instructed the district to activate psycho-social support services for these learners who were allegedly made to clean after the educator vomited in class.”

Mtima says the department also calls upon all educators to conduct themselves as parents in school and class, while also promoting the protection of learners' dignity.

He says since this is the first of its kind, the Department will also rope in employee wellness to assist in assessing the fitness of the educator to be in class.
