Three killed in taxi accident on R61

Three people have been killed after the taxi they were travelling in lost control on the R61 and overturned.

The spokesperson for the Provincial Transport Department, Unathi Binqose, said the accident happened on Thursday morning between Aberdeen and Beaufort West.

He said a Toyota Quantum minibus with 16 occupants including the driver was travelling from Beaufort West to the Eastern Cape when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Binqose said a minor child was among the three people who died in the accident.

He said he injured 12 occupants, including the driver, were taken to Aberdeen and Graaff-Reinet Hospitals for further treatment.

Binqose said it "alleged that driver had fallen asleep" leading to the accident.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Aberdeen SAPS for further investigations.
